Why AI-Generated Text Has Hidden Characters

Large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are trained on vast web corpora that use typographic conventions common in published writing — em dashes for parenthetical asides, curly (smart) quotes for proper typography, and non-breaking spaces to prevent line breaks. The models faithfully reproduce these characters, which look perfectly fine in formatted documents but cause real problems when the text enters code editors, form fields, spreadsheets, command-line tools, or any plain-text environment.

Zero-width characters are especially insidious: they are completely invisible to humans, break text searches, cause unexpected behavior in code, and can even trigger security filters. If you've ever pasted AI-generated text into a terminal and gotten a syntax error you couldn't explain, an invisible Unicode character is the most likely culprit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the AI Text Cleaner remove?

It removes em dashes (—), en dashes (–), smart/curly quotes (" " ' '), zero-width spaces, zero-width non-joiners, non-breaking spaces, ordinary ellipsis characters (…), and other hidden Unicode characters that AI writing tools often insert.

Why does AI text have special characters?

Large language models like ChatGPT and Claude are trained on web content that uses typographic conventions like em dashes and smart quotes. The models reproduce these characters, which look fine in print but cause problems in code editors, form fields, spreadsheets, and plain-text environments.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device, making this tool safe for sensitive content like emails, documents, and code.

What is a zero-width space?

A zero-width space (U+200B) is an invisible Unicode character that tells text renderers where a word can break. AI models sometimes insert them between words. They are invisible to humans but can break searches, copy-paste, and code parsing.
