How to Write a FAANG-Level Resume (2026 Guide)

A step-by-step guide to writing a software engineering resume that clears ATS filters, survives a 7-second recruiter scan, and gets you into the interview loop at Google, Meta, Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft.

📄 Format & Length

One page only

Unless you have 10+ years of experience. Recruiters spend ~7 seconds on a first pass — every line must earn its place.

Single column, clean layout

Two-column layouts confuse ATS parsers. Use a single column with clear section headers.

Standard fonts only

Calibri, Arial, or Helvetica at 10–11pt. Fancy fonts get mangled by ATS systems.

PDF format

Always submit as PDF. Word docs reflow differently on different machines and may break your formatting.

No photos, no graphics, no icons

ATS cannot parse images. They waste space and are not expected at top tech companies.

0.5–0.75 inch margins

Tight but not cramped. Gives you more space for content without looking cluttered.

🗂️ Section Order

Name + contact at the top

Email, LinkedIn, GitHub, and portfolio/personal site. Phone is optional. No full address — city and state only.

Summary (optional but powerful)

2–3 lines max. Use it to front-load keywords and frame your experience for the specific role. Skip if you're a new grad — let your experience speak.

Experience (most important)

Listed in reverse chronological order. This is what FAANG cares about most. It should take 60–70% of your resume.

Projects (critical for new grads)

2–4 projects with measurable impact. Include GitHub links. More important than GPA.

Education

University, degree, graduation year, and GPA only if above 3.5. New grads put this above experience.

Skills

Languages, frameworks, tools — listed as keywords. Keep it factual, no self-ratings or bars.

✍️ Writing Bullet Points (XYZ Formula)

Use the Google XYZ formula

"Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]." Every bullet should follow this pattern.

Start with a strong action verb

Led, Built, Reduced, Increased, Designed, Migrated, Optimized — not "Worked on" or "Helped with".

Quantify everything

Reduced API latency by 40%. Served 2M monthly users. Cut infra costs by $120k/year. Numbers make your impact undeniable.

1–2 lines per bullet, 3–5 bullets per role

More than 5 bullets per role means you're padding. Pick the highest-impact work.

Focus on impact, not tasks

"Redesigned the checkout flow, reducing drop-off by 18%" beats "Worked on the checkout page".

No first-person pronouns

Never write "I built" or "My team". Just "Built" or "Led a team of 4 engineers to...".

🔍 ATS & Keywords

Mirror the job description language

If the JD says "distributed systems", use that exact phrase — not "large-scale systems". ATS matches keywords literally.

Include tech stack in experience bullets

Don't just list Python in the Skills section — mention it in the context of your work: "Built data pipelines in Python and Apache Spark...".

Spell out acronyms once

Write "Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD)" the first time. ATS may not match the acronym alone.

Avoid tables and text boxes for key content

Many ATS systems cannot read text inside HTML tables or text boxes — your bullets may disappear entirely.

Use standard section headers

"Work Experience" not "Where I've Been". ATS looks for standard labels.

💼 Experience Section Deep-Dive

Company → Title → Dates on one line

Keep the format consistent across all roles. Month + Year format (Jun 2022 – Present).

Highlight scope and scale

FAANG loves scale. Mention team size, user base, data volume, request throughput — anything that signals you've worked on real systems.

Show ownership, not just contribution

"Owned the payments infrastructure" hits harder than "Contributed to the payments team". Show you were accountable.

Include cross-team or cross-functional work

Led cross-team initiatives, mentored juniors, drove technical decisions — these signal senior impact even at junior levels.

Internships count, even old ones

A Google or Meta internship from 3 years ago is still worth listing if it's relevant. FAANG recognises FAANG.

🚀 Projects Section

Only include projects you can defend

Every project is fair game in an interview. If you can't explain every line of code, cut it.

Lead with impact or scale

"Real-time chat app serving 5k concurrent users" beats "Chat application built with React and Node.js".

Include GitHub and live demo links

Recruiters and engineers will click them. Make sure the repo has a good README and the demo works.

Show system design thinking

"Implemented Redis caching layer reducing DB load by 60%" shows you think in systems, not just features.

Open source contributions count

A merged PR to a major OSS project (React, Kubernetes, etc.) is extremely impressive to FAANG engineers.

🚫 Common Mistakes That Get You Rejected

Typos and grammar errors

One typo can end your application. Have at least two other people proofread it. Use Grammarly as a baseline.

Generic objective statements

"Seeking a challenging position where I can grow..." — this says nothing. Use a specific summary or skip it entirely.

Listing responsibilities, not achievements

"Responsible for backend development" tells them nothing. What did you actually accomplish?

Skills section with "Microsoft Word"

Every software engineer can use Word. Only list technologies that are relevant to the role you're applying for.

Gaps with no explanation

If you have a gap of 6+ months, briefly address it — freelance work, personal projects, caregiving, health. Unexplained gaps raise flags.

Using the same resume for every job

Tailor the summary and top bullets for each company. A resume for Google and one for a startup should read differently.

✅ Final Checklist Before You Submit

Run it through an ATS scanner

Use Jobscan or Resume Worded to see your match score before submitting. Aim for 70%+ match to the JD.

Test the PDF on a different machine

Open it on Windows if you wrote it on Mac. Fonts and spacing can shift.

Check all links work

GitHub, LinkedIn, portfolio — click every link in the PDF. Dead links make you look careless.

Filename includes your name

"SyedPeera_Resume_2025.pdf" not "resume_final_v3.pdf". Recruiters save dozens of files per day.

Have a referral if possible

A referral at a FAANG company moves you from a 0.5% to a 5–15% callback rate. It's the single highest-leverage action you can take.

XYZ Formula — Before vs After

✗ Weak bullet

Worked on improving the performance of the backend services.

✓ Strong bullet (XYZ)

Reduced p99 API latency by 62% (800ms → 300ms) by migrating synchronous DB calls to an async queue pattern, unblocking 3 downstream teams.

Ready to prep for the interview?

Once your resume lands you an interview, make sure your coding skills are ready. Start with the Blind 75 or browse by pattern.
